Kurd mastiff (Pshdar) is a type of mastiff, often used as guard dogs and for protection of flocks of sheep and goats from predators. This race is the oldest breed of dogs in the Asian region. Inscriptions made from the Babylonian and Assyrian civilizations prove this claim (3000 BC). These inscriptions are kept in the Louvre museum and the British Museum of London. The dog is found in Iran in the cities of Mahabad, Bukan, Saqez, Sanandaj, Piranshahr and most of the cities of West Azerbaijan and parts of Kurdistan, and there are Iraqis in the Iraqi Kurdistan such as the city of Pshdar, and some of them are considered as Pzhdar or Pshdar.

The coats of Kurd mastiffs can be yellow, white, red, burgundy, blue and black colors. The breed has loose skin, large jowls, and non-cartilaginous (soft, floppy) ears..
